The Artist - Mark Stonestreet
From the temple carvers of south India to the stone masons of Europe, traveling to the source of the stone and learning from the artisans that have worked it for generations, has been key in my ability to create these sculptures. I am a devoted sketcher, drawing is the base of all my work. I will always start with a line, hand drawn on the surface of the stone. As stone is removed and the line becomes a form, the sculpture emerges. Granite is my primary material, I enjoy the process involved in shaping this incredibly hard stone, from rough cutting to polishing its totally absorbing. The 300 million year history of the stone its strength and longevity demand respect and I am always conscious of what I do to it now, is the form it will carry for the next millennia.
