Wood, Gesso and paint
The Artist - Isabel Coulton SWAc Assoc
Isabel Coulton works mainly in wood and stone, but occasionally a subject strikes her and the subject matter determines a new material to play with. ‘Neck and Neck’ is one such detour from the norm, cut in Corten steel; a steel that turns a beautiful rust red, and remains stable once oxidised, no longer rusting any further. Inspired by a day at the races. Isabel’s love of experimentation and discovery leads her in many exciting directions, but essentially she is driven to explore the human figure in wood and stone. Life drawing narrates her inspiration, wood suggests sensual forms and stone allows her own simple forms to be delivered into calm, peaceful essences of humanity. Born in Paris and educated in London’s west end, Isabel earned a scholarship for the City and Guilds of London art school, Kennington, where she learned historic wood and stone carving. Today, her commissions are ecclesiastical — a delight and a challenge and a continual opportunity to learn.
