The Artist - Archie Browning

Having grown up on a farm in Essex, where my family have worked the land for five generations, there is so much archaeological evidence of those before us that goes back to Neolithic times. It is this as well as a lifelong interest in Celtic, Maori, aboriginal and Aztec art that has influenced my work. Having always made large scale abstract paintings, I began experimenting in 3d first in polystyrene, fibre glass and resin with my mother and sculptor; Lucy Lutyens - creating large-scale outdoor pieces. In the last two years I then took this one stage further and began stone carving and started working with the acclaimed sculptor Harry Gray, in Cambridge. More recently I went to India to work with traditional artisans in Mahaballapuram carving in granite. A period learning to carve marble in Carrara in Italy further honed my skills and then onto Mexico to learn with master carver Gerrardo Bevera. My work has an earthy and tribal, prehistoric quality to it reflecting ancient civilisations and powerful totemic objects. I have an intuitive approach to my work whereby I have discovered through the creative process an inner peace and mediative process where intuitively my hands and soul take over and my mind is quietened.
