The Artist - Nigel Grist
Iím a printmaker and photographer and work with a mixture of techniques including linocuts, collagraphs, direct printing and etchings mainly of aluminium. Sometimes several techniques are combined. Originally a biologist and now a Dartmoor guide both experiences influence the images I make, sometimes subconsciously. Many years viewing flora and fauna down a microscope has left a love of detail and the minute. At the other end of the scale I try to capture some element of the wide open spaces of the moor. The moor is both complex and simple: large areas of seemingly identical open land but with complex patterns and colours. A simple, complex mix of stone, sky, grass and water. Sometimes an imageís origin is fairly clear in other instances itís much less certain. Iím learning to leave an image as an image perhaps becoming an abstract. If it works then why unpick its origin?
