The Artist - Janet Mitchell SWAc Assoc
After a formal art education: four years drawing and painting from a life model, my work now is about putting together small pieces to make something larger. Over the years I have used a wide variety of media from etching with chine collé, beach plastic assemblages, discarded paper memorabilia to watercolour. Now I am working with collaged cotton fabric, dyed and waxed and stitched or knotted together with bookbinders’ linen thread. Representational elements have replaced abstraction and a series of portraits has emerged: Queen, King, Boy and Flora, partly observed, partly imagined building upon what is there. Group exhibitions include Royal Academy, Royal West of England Academy Bristol, Royal Watercolour Society, Mall Galleries, Oxford University and Brighton University.
