The Artist - Deborah Harrison
I was born in Yorkshire and discovered stone carving at an arts festival in my middle years. After winning a competition, I decided to follow my passion and turn professional. When carving alabaster, I use a technique called ‘Carving Direct’ where I am guided by the stone’s shape, grain and colour. I carve until I reach a kind of skin and the piece takes on a life of its own. Other influences include organic forms, social justice and faith. My works are both abstract and figurative. I am based at Gloucester City Works where I lead carving courses and take commissions.
