The Artist - Nigel Grist
I’m a printmaker and photographer and work with various techniques including linocuts, collagraphs and etching. In many of my images several techniques are combined. Originally a biologist and now a Dartmoor guide, both experiences influence the images I make, sometimes subconsciously. They tend to fall into two quite different groups. As a biologist, there’s frequently a floral or faunal component and sometimes this is fairly obvious. Often however there’s a fairly abstract element, trying to capture some aspect of an idea or the feel of a place. I like words too, and in many instances titles precede the image, but then pose the question, ‘How do I visualise that’? A constant goal is to capture the idea of layers of history: some hidden and unseen, below the surface; others more visible but perhaps no more obvious in their origins. I am, slowly, learning to walk more, see more, think less.
