The Artist - Adrian Bates
Primarily self-taught, Adrian has also undertaken intensive workshops with other established makers working in clay, wood and metal. These and a background in graphics and craft have come together to inform the design and intent of his work. Adrian has been making and refining his sculptural forms and vessels for many years. Central themes explore growth and transition and apply to an exploration of subtly contrasting surface textures and finishes; how surface form interacts with the overall shape and the origin (base) leads through the overall form to the termination (rim) of vessels. Abstracted forms explore the stripping away of the structure to follow the interplay between the smooth flow of the surfaces and flowing lines of edges. Light and shade, shadow and highlight play an important role in presenting the overall subtlety of the form and these are enhanced by the careful use of glaze and texture, with contrasting surfaces treated differently to gently enhance the differing qualities of interior and exterior surfaces or facets.
