The Artist - Deborah Harrison
I was born in Yorkshire and discovered stone carving at an arts festival in my middle years. In 2014 after the passing away of my mother I decided to follow my passion and turned professional. When carving, I use a technique called ‘Carving Direct’ where I follow the stone’s shape, grain and colour. I carve until I reach a kind of skin and the piece takes on a life of its own. I aspire to reach a convergence between the form and colour of the stone, the experience of my carving skills and the expression of my faith. I have won two sculpture awards and had several notable sales including the NHS Trust and the chair of United Nations subcommittee. My works are both abstract and figurative. I am based at Gloucester City Works where I lead carving courses and take commissions.
