The Artist - Ama Menec
My work often covers themes of loss and recovery whether that be species, Gods or feminist and lesbian icons. With my sculptures I celebrate our recovered populations of Buzzards and Red Kites, or the reclamation of Ancient Gods repurposed to fit modern times. I started my proposal for a life sized Anne Lister for the University of York before the filming of Gentleman Jack, and I am now waiting for the University of York’s Arts Committee appraisal of this maquette. I am very keen to move into public art as I believe art is for everyone, and having taught lesbian herstory, I am keen to rescue such awesome women from obscurity. I work in patinated foundry bronze as this material liberates the form from gravity and so liberates me artistically. The quality of the patination is second to none, making each piece thoroughly believable, and is the reason I use this foundry.
