The Artist - Paul Vanstone

Using marble, onyx, alabaster, and bronze, materials Vanstone has been working with for over a quarter of a century, each piece maps, like a drawing, the time spent working it by hand and the journey from quarry to sculptural form. Each piece starts in the quarry, from Carrara in Italy to Portugal and Rajasthan, in India. Walking through these stone yards, often well trodden paths through landscapes of marble blocks as far as the eye can see, these journeys are an essential part of the creative process, stimulating ideas and forging new directions in his work. Back at the studio, the blocks are drawn on, one carving often informing the next. Marrying material and subject, Vanstone uses the particular qualities of each stone, to convey how it absorbs and reflects light like human skin. He is able to transform hard stone to portray the softness and curvature of the human body. From subtle to dramatic, he uses the veining of each stone to accentuate the form creating movement and drama. Vanstone is heavily influenced by classical sculpture but equally by modern interpretations, and in particular the drapery and architecture of cloth around the human body.
