The Artist - Richard Cresswell

This year I find that my inspiration remain the same, nature and beautiful curves shapes and movement you find everywhere as you look at this world we inhabit, but I have had to come up with some new ways of working as my body keeps reminding me I'm older than I used to be. I have been developing new pieces which are still large in scale but made either made up of small elements or in lighter materials which are easier to manipulate. My latest piece Dragonfly stems from 60 years ago when I was shown my father's Victorian microscope, all mahogany and polished brass. In a little draw there was a throat losenge tin with a full set of dragonfly wings which I spent hours wondering at both the size of the insect and also the iridescent colours of the membrane between the delicate skeleton. I have tried to recreate that with my new sculptures pretty well I think. No microscope required although I do still have the microscope. Creating large scale kinetic pieces which please me is what I do quite well and always result in them having a calm and natural feel which it seems others also find appealing. See what you think?
