The Artist - Paul Harvey
Paul has sold work all over the world, as well as to the Royal family, and has exhibited at Chelsea flower show on many occasions. His studio is set in the middle of the Hampshire countryside on the edge of a half-acre pond , which over the past fourteen years he has with his wife turned into a small nature reserve. This in turn has encouraged many of the birds he sculpts to show themselves in their true and natural light. The site was formally the old watercress beds for the Earl of Carnarvon’s Highclere estate (Downton Abbey fame) and is a 3 acre glade surrounded by agriculture. Paul has been sculpting since the age of ten, having been introduced to woodcarving at primary school. Birds being an interest from an early age, and having kept numerous species as pets in aviaries, he was keen to carve them in wood. However birds, with their delicate features didn’t lend themselves to woodcarving, so the design had to be simplified. This style that combined with his other great interest Art Deco forms his work today, even though now working in bronze and resin gives an almost unlimited freedom in design.
