The Artist - Jane Fremantle
Jane Fremantle hand-carves stone, mainly alabaster, soapstone, and onyx. Stone selection is a vital part of her process, as she celebrates the natural character of each piece, working with its richness and unpredictability. She explores its texture, translucency, the roughness of the stone and its appearance when smoothed. She investigates its ability to hold the tool marks and gestures that reveal the presence of the artist. Each sculpture is a balance between the material qualities of the stone and her own ideas and inspirations. She draws on the wild Atlantic coastline for its energy and movement, and figures from Greek myths to inhabit that landscape. Jane has an MFA in Sculpture from West Dean College and works in her studio near Chichester in West Sussex. Jane was a featured sculptor at the biennial Doddington Hall Sculpture Exhibition, she exhibits her sculptures nationally, and has work in private collections worldwide.
