The Artist - Rebecca Thomas
Rebecca’s contemporary sculptural vases are decorated with layers of textural pattern. They are hand-built from slabs of clay that’s shaped around formers and moulds and gradually refined to create the elegant silhouette that characterises her work. Rebecca's inspiration comes from classical and modern sources, including the shape of Ancient Greek amphorae, William Morris wallpaper and digital imagery. She prints fragments of original designs and traditional motifs onto the ceramic surface by silk-screening underglaze ink onto a gel plate and transferring it onto the vessels in randomised sections. This monotype approach achieves a unique pattern on each piece. Rebecca works from her home studio in London. Her love of clay began with a life sculpture evening class following which she started studying ceramics at Morley College. After a long career in IT marketing, she now enjoys the creative challenge of making ceramics.
