The Artist - John DixonSuccessful art makes you think. And respond. The artist’s creative process is a function of their responses to a multitude of situations, environments, happenings, coincidences. Combined subconsciously, weathered, mulled over, slept on, for weeks, months, years. Then, often when you least expect it, nuggets of ideas eventually emerge, disguised, reformatted, upcycled. Then there’s the endless trialling, experimenting, playing, overthinking. The frustration, procrastination, deliberation, and the waiting. Until finally……. Another of John’s favourite ingredients is humour. Because the artist wants you to think, sometimes you need a little help to bond with the art, and the artist. Humour helps to bring the artist and viewer closer together. It enables a sneak preview into the motivations, beliefs and dedication of the artist. And what of the message? All of John’s pictures are made from plastic washed up on beaches around the south-west. Packaging waste, abandoned fishing nets, lost toys. Each piece a by-product of our throwaway society. All collected, cleaned, sorted, stored … then patiently waiting for that nugget of an idea to bring them back to life. But they shouldn’t have been there in the first place. | |
