The Artist - Alison Whateley SWAcAlison is a contemporary mixed media textile artist whose work explores the ever changing landscapes and seascapes of the natural world. Self-taught, she began her artistic practice in her late forties and has since developed a distinctive visual language that moves between representation and abstraction. Alison works intuitively, allowing each piece to evolve organically rather than from a predetermined plan. She draws inspiration directly from her surroundings, using photographs to capture both expansive views and intimate details of texture, pattern, and colour. These observations inform her approach, guiding the use of colour, materials, and techniques to create layered and often richly textured surfaces that convey depth and movement. Her work has been exhibited widely across the UK, including selected exhibitions at the Mall Galleries with the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the ING Discerning Eye. She was a participant in Series 9 of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year. Alison is an Academician of the South West Academy of Fine & Applied Arts as well as a member of the Devon Artist Network and the Society for Embroidered Work. | |
