The Artist - Val Uglow

I studied in London prior to teaching in some vibrant art departments in the South and East of the capital. Some of that time, I specialised in textile design and printing; that core interest is still prevalent in my evolving work to date. I strive to convey the essence of what excites me in both natural and man made structures. The interaction of strength and delicacy that is found in the sea and landscape of Devon resonates with me. The vibrating light onto seawater makes a wonderful contrast against the texture of the rocks. The sensitive ageing of buildings offer complex textural elements and provide the basis for my semi-abstract work. Often I make my own paints from pure pigments with a variety of other media, such as marble dust, sand and iron. This enables me to make assemblages in a considered and innovative manner to achieve the results that I seek.
