The Artist - Charlotte Sainsbury
Charlotte Sainsbury is a contemporary printmaker working from her home on an estuary, just off the River Tamar in Cornwall. Specialising in the printing technique of Collagraph she creates bold and colourful designs inspired by the marine and mining heritage of the area. She is particularly drawn to the juxtaposition of man-made structures, such as harbours, docks, viaducts and tin mines, set against the rugged beauty of the natural world.Charlotte’s creative process involves using the printing plate as a matrix not in order to produce multiple prints, but to experiment with different colours and techniques in the ‘inking up of the plate’. Each print is treated individually by applying the ink in a painterly way using brushes, rags and rollers, to emphasise the surface textures and control the areas of colour. Despite coming from the same plate and being part of an edition, each print has its own unique qualities with no two prints being the same.
