The Artist - Hamish Holman
Hamish Holman is a contemporary British sculptor working in stone, whose practice is shaped as much by the rhythms of the land as by the geometry of form. Based on Dartmoor, with roots on a working farm, he developed an early awareness of natural cycles and a deep respect for material — qualities that continue to guide his work today. Music remains central to his process, lending his sculpture a quiet rhythm and a sense of flow that carries through every line and surface. Carving in Kilkenny limestone, Carrara marble, and other richly charactered stones, Hamish creates abstract forms that suggest motion even in stillness. His Good Vibrations series, for example, transforms a simple cube into interlocking arcs that shift as the viewer moves around them — works that feel discovered as much as designed. Surface and void play together throughout his practice, with light animating the stone to reveal its inner life. Over the past three years, Hamish’s work has been in respected exhibitions including Delamore Arts, Sculpture by the Lakes, and with South West Sculptors, and can be found in collections and gardens across the UK. In 2025, he was shortlisted for the London Sculpture Prize and will be exhibiting at the Chelsea Flower Show 2026, marking an important moment of recognition within the contemporary sculptural landscape. Alongside these exhibitions, he undertakes both public and private commissions, scaling his pieces to suit interiors, landscapes, and architectural contexts. Each Hamish Holman sculpture is an invitation to slow down — to consider how stone, in its permanence, can hold movement, rhythm, and memory. His work carries a quiet authority: rooted in tradition, yet alive with contemporary presence.
