The Artist - Kate Anstead
As a sculptor, I explore the intricate relationship between humanity and nature. Working with materials such as concrete, glass, stone and wood, I create objects that reflect our physical interactions with the landscape. Nature’s textures, forms and rhythms inspire me, alongside the visible effects of weather, erosion and human activity. Through my work, I seek to capture the tension between permanence and transience, creating pieces that invite reflection and dialogue with the viewer. Material is integral to each work’s contextual presence, with subject and setting guiding my choices. The resulting forms sit somewhere between artefact and contemporary archaeological relic. After completing a BA in Sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Architectural Stonework Conservation, I spent many years repairing and conserving stone artefacts, structures, and architectural features in ecclesiastical and heritage settings. This created and fuelled my interest in how objects interact with their particular environments, how we have manipulated our environments and how nature reflects at us. I have recently completed a Master’s in Fine Art at Arts University Plymouth, further expanding my research into materiality, environment, and the dialogue between human intervention and the natural world.
