The Artist - Lorraine Gilroy

Training in Ceramics, Art History and a career in education, Lorraine returned to Ceramics in 2007, producing thrown, assembled stoneware for exhibitions and galleries. Participating in a 2007 anagama firing in Japan, plus since 2012 with Westcountry Potters Association, she prefers raku and barrel firing techniques for ‘chance flame happenings’. Her recent Masters’ Degree at Arts University Plymouth featured foraged clay materials from Sidmouth. In 2025, Lorraine joined 65 potters led by Anna Hearn to fire Kigbeare community kiln, Okehampton to over 1250°C, in four-hour shifts over 120 hours. These vessels feature ash-based Shino glazes intensifying colour and feel. Wood firing is acknowledged as one of the highest forms of ceramic art, due to collaborative firing. Lorraine has exhibited her ceramics in the UK, Hungary, Japan. A former Chair of Westcountry Potters' Association; member of Creative Older Women (CROWs) Exeter plus Exeter Artists’ Collective, she is inspired by creative collaboration
