A West country resident since 1983 and member of MAKE Southwest (formerly Devon Guild of Craftsmen) for 38 years Malcolm creates unique hand-built, intricately detailed, humorous ceramics. For the 2026 Kiln Room, Malcolm has stepped away from his established practice to explore a new body of work. These pieces draw on his fascination with space and early science fiction, inspired by the exuberant worlds of Flash Gordon and Saturday matinees, Dan Dare and the Eagle comic, a foray into Steampunk - and a tribute to 2001: A Space Odyssey on its 58th anniversary. Malcolm uses T-Material clay for its suitability for both intricate and large-scale work. His process involves hand-building using slab and modelling techniques, then the work is biscuit fired to1000°C. Coloured underglaze is applied and the piece fired again to 1240°C. Finally, gold and platinum lustres are added highlighting detail, and the work fired again to 740°C.
